I've seen
in person in the Armand Hammer collection and was just hoping to find it here
[in Major paintings] . . .
It's a
portrait, but more than a piece of a singular subject, it's an "ode to
red" featuring an... | GA | igrkio
Femme avec Fourrures (Woman with Furs) c. 1880-1885 Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Williamstown, MA |
At one
point it was thought that the person Sargent gave
this to (D. Vergeses) was the subject but it was
later believed that it probbaly wasn't.

I've
attached a shot of the museum's title card too. This is a small painting. I've
included a poor shot of it in it's
frame just for scale. I love the... | GA | igrkio
Miss Poppy Graeme 1881 |
This same
year Sargent painted Robert
Farquharson. According to Charles Merrill Mount, the painting is also
inscribed: "To my friend Mr. Farquharson", 24 x 20 ½ , and as
of the 1950's the painting was held with the family.

Dr. Robert Farquharson of Finzean (1875-1899) 1881 |
From: Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums
The sitter
was the older brother of Joseph Farquharson RA who
was a friend of John Singer Sargent. This dashing
portrait illustrates very clearly Sargent's bold use
of brushwork and limited palette. Robert Farquharson
was laird of Finzean near Banchory
and also the member of Parliament for West... | GA | igrkio
Violet Paget (Vernon Lee) 1881 |
Vernon Lee, was a pen name for Violet Paget (1856-1935). She was a
childhood friend of John Sargent, after growing up
together they both, it appears, were involved in the same art community. She
was a prolific novelist, essayist and critic, and had written at least one book
about the nature of beauty in Art.
Vernon was
close to John and his... | GA | igrkio

Violet Sargent (1870-1955) was John's youngest sister. After
studying at the Accademia delle
Belle Arti, she married Francis Ormond. Of the three
siblings, Violet was the only one to marry and she would have six children (see
Genealogy). She, along with her daughters would be featured in so many of
John's paintings -- really too long to list (in... | GA | igrkio

. . .the woman Sargent had [a]
relationship with her right before she got married was Charlotte Louise
Burckhardt (Lady with the Rose, which is hanging in the Metropolitan Museum of
Art . . . I have read somewhere
that there was even a talk of an engagement. She died so young, not long after

Madame Paul Escudier c. 1882-1884 Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Williamstown, MA |
Bust
portrait of Madame Paul Escudier (1861-1950) wearing a black coat with diamond
pin and a black hat with white ribbons. (SIRIS)
Sargent
emphasizes the sitter's hat, which is central to her overall appearance and
style. A decorative mound of wide white ribbons on the top of her hat makes a
bold statement against her black dress and a painted... | GA | igrkio |
