Ormond and
Kilmurray say in their book, Early Portraits (p.63), that not a lot is known
about this painting and its origin. In 1923 the painting was purchased by
Charles Deering, a close friend of Sargent.

was an English [1] art student in Paris who enrolled in Alexandre Cabanel's
atelier in 1872 at the age of 29. He was born in 1843 and if the dating of this
painting is correct, he would have been 39 when Sargent painted him.

Q. What is the meaning of El Jaleo?
I just
viewed a video called American Visions: the Gilded Age, done for PBS in 1997
written and narrated by Robert Hughes. In it he talks about El Jaleo. He says
it means the spontaneous clapping and shouting that comes like an
"Olay!" at the apex of a performance.

joined the atelier in '82 at the age of eighteen making him the Freshman to the
