When I saw
this on special exhibition at the Denver Art Museum in July of 2003, it took up
pretty much a good two-thirds of a wall. It was substantial compared to the
other Sargent paintings in the room (Sargent and Italy).

Scooner
Head is loacted in Acadia National Park, which is only a couple of miles south
of Bar Harbor Maine. This painting, along with "Schooner Catherine
Somes" was painted while Sargent was visiting cousins. The two paintings
were in the Hale family and the figure on the beach was belived to have been of

Sargent painted it a number of times, but never full-on or complete.
He characterized
his paintings in Venice as "snapshots" and wanted very much to
