Portrait of Arthur Daintrey c. 1882 Private Collection Unknown, USA |
Daintrey
was an English [1] art student in Paris who enrolled in Alexandre Cabanel's
atelier in 1872 at the age of 29. He was born in 1843 and if the dating of this
painting is correct, he would have been 39 when Sargent painted him.
Other
artists in Cabanel's atelier in the 70's included Henry Bacon, Frank Fowler,
Charles Stuart Forbes, Kenyon... | GA | igrkio | |

Portrait of Mrs. Daniel Sargent Curtis 1882 |
Mrs. Daniel Sargent Curtis
c. 1882
She was the
mother of Ralph Wormeley Curtis -- cousin to Sargent and fellow American artist
in Paris. The painting is very dark, though in person you can see gradations of
dark colors for the background.
John would
later paint her with her husband, son and daughter-in-law in 1898

Pressing the Grapes Florentine Wine Cellar 1882 Beaverbrook Art Gallery Fredericton, NB |
When I saw this in Denver (July 2003) I found it to have an overall
purple tone in the painting evoking, obviously, the wine process. What you can't see very well in
this image are boys turning a large wine press inside the room below and to the
right of the window.

Sortie de l’eglise, de l’eglise, Campo San Canciano, Venice 1882 National Gallery of Art Washington, D.C. |
From: The National Gallery of Art
. . . "Ignoring the traditional
tourist spots, [Sargent] explored the city’s
vernacular architecture and the daily life of its inhabitants. In Sortie de l’église, Campo San Canciano,
Venice (Leaving the Church), he focuses on the black-shawled
women crossing the square in the early morning light, which is... | GA | igrkio |
