I've seen

It's a

Femme avec Fourrures (Woman with Furs) c. 1880-1885 Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Williamstown, MA |
At one
point it was thought that the person Sargent gave
this to (D. Vergeses) was the subject but it was
later believed that it probbaly wasn't.

Miss Poppy Graeme 1881 |
This same
year Sargent painted Robert
Farquharson. According to Charles Merrill Mount, the painting is also
inscribed: "To my friend Mr. Farquharson", 24 x 20 ½ , and as
of the 1950's the painting was held with the family.

The sitter
was the older brother of Joseph Farquharson RA who
was a friend of John Singer Sargent. This dashing
portrait illustrates very clearly Sargent's bold use
of brushwork and limited palette. Robert Farquharson

Violet Paget (Vernon Lee) 1881 |
Vernon Lee, was a pen name for Violet Paget (1856-1935). She was a
childhood friend of John Sargent, after growing up
together they both, it appears, were involved in the same art community. She
was a prolific novelist, essayist and critic, and had written at least one book
about the nature of beauty in Art.

Violet Sargent (1870-1955) was John's youngest sister. After
studying at the Accademia delle
Belle Arti, she married Francis Ormond. Of the three
siblings, Violet was the only one to marry and she would have six children (see
Genealogy). She, along with her daughters would be featured in so many of

Daintrey
was an English [1] art student in Paris who enrolled in Alexandre Cabanel's
atelier in 1872 at the age of 29. He was born in 1843 and if the dating of this
painting is correct, he would have been 39 when Sargent painted him.

Q. What is the meaning of El Jaleo?
I just
viewed a video called American Visions: the Gilded Age, done for PBS in 1997
written and narrated by Robert Hughes. In it he talks about El Jaleo. He says
it means the spontaneous clapping and shouting that comes like an
"Olay!" at the apex of a performance.

Venetian
Loggia was painted during the years 1880-82, an intensely fertile period for

the artist’s creative senses and led to some of his most visually
intriguing and original... | GA | igrkio | |
Pressing the Grapes Florentine Wine Cellar 1882 Beaverbrook Art Gallery Fredericton, NB |
When I saw this in Denver (July 2003) I found it to have an overall
purple tone in the painting evoking, obviously, the wine process. What you can't see very well in
this image are boys turning a large wine press inside the room below and to the
right of the window.

The
painting is of the Venetian model Gigia Viani. She is used by John continuously in most of his
Venetian studies. This particular portrait stands out from his other Venetian
