public square or space, so this is the courtyard right off the canal facing the
church Frari.
Sargent's
early watercolors can be significantly different in tone to his later work.
Generally you see careful brushwork
and tight, small, and much more controlled washes of color than his later work.

I spent ten
days in Venice in January, 2005,
[and took the photo below].
Campo Sant' Agnese is still there and still looks remarkably like the
painting. You can stand, or sit, right where Mr. Sargent did.

appears to be fishermen drying their nets on the beach somewhat in theme with
what he would do in Egypt in 1890-1891:

the work is difficult as I can put Sargent NEAR Algeria any number of years but

Brooks Chadwick (1850 - 1943) was an American painter best known for his
landscapes. He studied at Harvard and arrived in Paris in 1873. It was Chadwick
that would introduce Sargent to John's distant cousin
Ralph Wormeley Curtis. Curtis had been a friend of
Chadwick's from Harvard.
