notes
Probably the most tourist view painting he did of Venice. We are looking sort of northwest from the lagoon. You can see the Palazzo Ducale and the campanile of San Marco  to the right and the domed Santa Maria della Salute to the left. Note: Offered by Sothbeys but not sold; 5/27/1999; Lot 110; estimated $50,000-$75,000 The source didn't date...

The Bead Stringers of Venice

1880-82
Oil on canvas laid on board
56.2 x 81.9 cm (22 1/8 x 32 1/4 in.)

notes
The painting, an unfinished sketch, shows bead stringers assembling the beads as they sit outside in a small alley or corridor. The two nearest women face an open door, possibly a bead shop similar to what Sargent painted in Venetian Glass Workers (thumbnail). Apparently whatever he was planning for the doorway, he grew frustrated and scraped, or...

Study of Donatello's Saint John

1880
Graphite on off-white wove paper
30.7 x 22.1 cm

notes
The date of this sketchs ares unknown, though I know he was painting the outside of the Frari in 1880 and the brevity of the sketch falls in line with the same kind of energy of the Two Studies for El Jaleo which were c. 1879-82.  See Donatello's St. John  in Juxtaposition with Sargent's Donatello   Italian sculptor, Florentine...

Born in Valparaiso which is right on the coast and not too far from the capital, Ramón (1854-1937) was the Chilean Counsul to Paris. At twenty-six years old he was only two years older than John. Ramón was active in the artistic community, cultivating a number of friends. He was himself an amateur artist.  His career was quite successful,...

Ralph Wormeley Curtis (1854-1922)  American painter, was Boston born and a graduate of Harvard. He eventually lived in Europe and was a painter of portraits, genres, and interiors. Portrait of Jean Joseph Marie Carries

1880
Oil on canvas
22 by 18 1/4 in.

notes
Carrièrs was a Parisian sculptor and had exhibited portrait busts at the Salon in 1879 and 1881. Carrièrs was one year older than Sargent. The painting, like many he did of friends, shows Sargent at his freest and most expressive.  There is no way the image here shows adequately the thick paint, and the rapid brush strokes of this portrait,...
