Julia Fulton was the eldest daughter of Robert Fulton and Harriet (Livingston) Fulton. She was married to Charles Blight of Philadelphia in 1831. Although she was an associate member of the National Academy of Design from 1828 to 1831, she never exhibited her work at the Academy, and her career in art seems to have ended with her marriage.

The identity of both mother and child in this portrait is open to question since the mother may be either the first or second wife of Daniel Truman of New Haven, Connecticut. His first wife whom he married in 1792 was Amelia Thompson, daughter of Isaac Thompson of New Haven. She died in 1803. His second wife whom he married two years later was Mary...
