The
Luxembourg Gardens began as part of the Palais
du Luxembourg which was built in 1620 for Marie de Médicis,
widow of Henri IV, on the site of former mansion of Duke of Luxembourg.
The gardens
are 25 hectares large (61.8 acres). They are part formal garden with terraces
and gravel paths,

The
painting is a copy of Diego Velázquez's "King Philip IV as a Huntsman"
which is hanging at the Prado. It highlights Sargent's interest in studying
Velázquez for use in his portraits.
Sargent
must have copied this work on one of his trips to Spain. The date is a guess by
me but 1879 coincides with one of his trips to the Prado.

inscription at the bottom is partly cut off by the image but it reads: "To my
friend McKim John S Sargent."

who would form McKim, Mead and White, the
architectural firm who would work with Sargent in

This is
Sargent's first full length portrait. Notice the change of focus of the grass
around her face compared to the trees and stone railing of the Madame
Pailleron's parents country estate at Ronjoux, Chambéry, Savoy in the
south of France where this was painted.
