Unknown Dancer (Untitled) 1879-1882 |
Recently I
received a letter (1999):
My uncle
has just passed away. He was an art collector. I found a painting that is a
John Singer Sargent. It was purchased from the Detroit Institute of Arts in the
early 70's. It is being cleaned at this time. I wanted to know if you might
have an idea to the name of this portrait . . .

Daughters of Edward Darley Boit 1882 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA |
In 1883
Sargent exhibited at the Salon his portrait which he called Portraits d'Enfants
or Daughters of Edward Darley Boit. Its composition was criticized for its
"four corners and a void" the children not having any relationship to
each other but the painting, overall, was widely praised. (Charteris, P57-58).
