I spent ten
days in Venice in January, 2005,
[and took the photo below].
Campo Sant' Agnese is still there and still looks remarkably like the
painting. You can stand, or sit, right where Mr. Sargent did.
Please

Campo means
public square or space, so this is the courtyard right off the canal facing the
church Frari.
Sargent's
early watercolors can be significantly different in tone to his later work.
Generally you see careful brushwork
and tight, small, and much more controlled washes of color than his later work.

Sargent is
positioned himself just east of the Piazzetta at San Marco looking west. The domed
building across the canal is the Santa Maria della Salute. The Libreria is straight ahead beyond the steps and
bridge; and the front facade of the Palazzo Ducaleis on the far right.
Further
west along the Riva degli Schiavoni he paints in oil.
