Vernon Lee, was a pen name for Violet Paget (1856-1935). She was a
childhood friend of John Sargent, after growing up
together they both, it appears, were involved in the same art community. She
was a prolific novelist, essayist and critic, and had written at least one book
about the nature of beauty in Art.

Violet Sargent (1870-1955) was John's youngest sister. After
studying at the Accademia delle
Belle Arti, she married Francis Ormond. Of the three
siblings, Violet was the only one to marry and she would have six children (see

Kilmurray say in their book, Early Portraits (p.63), that not a lot is known
about this painting and its origin. In 1923 the painting was purchased by
Charles Deering, a close friend of Sargent.
