Portrait of Sir George Lewis 1896 Private Collection Unknown, USA |
Every
generation has one: cocky, powerful, brutally effective. They appear on
everyone's "A" list for solicitors. Sir George Lewis was at the top of everyone's "dream
team". He was the most preeminent solicitor in London and was Sargent's
solicitor.
George's
second wife was Lady Lewis (nee Elizabeth Eberstadt) whom John painted in 1892.

President Woodrow Wilson 1917 |
President
Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924) twenty-eighth president of the United
States.
In 1917 JSS
paints the President but unlike what you might assume, the painting isn't owned
inside the United States but is owned by the National Gallery of Ireland. The
reason for this is explained in Sargent's own words in a letter to Mrs. Gardner

Pressing the Grapes Florentine Wine Cellar 1882 Beaverbrook Art Gallery Fredericton, NB |
When I saw this in Denver (July 2003) I found it to have an overall
purple tone in the painting evoking, obviously, the wine process. What you can't see very well in
this image are boys turning a large wine press inside the room below and to the
right of the window.
