notes
Albert de Belleroche (1864-1944) was a fellow art student in Carolus-Duran's studio. He joined the atelier in '82 at the age of eighteen making him the Freshman to the Upper Classman Sargent who was twenty-six. The dedication to "baby Milbank" is actually the senior Sargent affectionately/teasingly nodding to the new kid --  "Milbank" being...

Portrait of Mrs. Daniel Sargent Curtis

1882
Oil on canvas
71.1 x 53.3 cm (28 x 21 in.)

notes
Mrs. Daniel Sargent Curtis c. 1882 She was the mother of Ralph Wormeley Curtis -- cousin to Sargent and fellow American artist in Paris. The painting is very dark, though in person you can see gradations of dark colors for the background. John would later paint her with her husband, son and daughter-in-law in 1898 ...

Venetian Courtyard

c. 1882
Oil on canvas
71.7 by 80.6 cm (27 1/2 x 31 3/4 in.)

notes
From: Sothebys Venetian Loggia was painted during the years 1880-82, an intensely fertile period for Sargent—a time of extensive travel and the search for new and exotic subject matter, when the confluence of fresh experiences and varied stimuli fed the artist’s creative senses and led to some of his most visually intriguing and original...

Pressing the Grapes Florentine Wine Cellar

1882
Oil
83.50 x 49.85 cm

Beaverbrook Art Gallery

Fredericton, NB

notes
When I saw this in Denver (July 2003) I found it to have an overall purple tone in the painting evoking, obviously, the wine process. What you can't see very well in this image are boys turning a large wine press inside the room below and to the right of the window. Exhibitions Sargent and Italy, 2002-2003

Italian Girl with Fan

Oil on canvas
238.1 x 133.4 cm (93 3/4 x 52 1/2 in.)

Cincinnati Art Museum

Cincinnati, OH

notes
The painting is of the Venetian model Gigia Viani. She is used by John continuously in most of his Venetian studies. This particular portrait stands out from his other Venetian work in more ways than one. First of all, you can't dismiss its enormous size. At 2.38 meters high (7.8 feet) it is clearly larger than life. It is also one of the few...

notes
The painting is very much in the vernacular of Velázquez. Notes: Special thanks go to Cristina,  <xinabonita@mixmail.com> for telling me about four paintings held at the Thyssen-Bornemiseza museum.
