King Philip IV (of Spain) 1879 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA |
The
painting is a copy of Diego Velázquez's "King Philip IV as a Huntsman"
which is hanging at the Prado. It highlights Sargent's interest in studying
Velázquez for use in his portraits.
Sargent
must have copied this work on one of his trips to Spain. The date is a guess by
me but 1879 coincides with one of his trips to the Prado.

before he began. I think watercolor appears to... | GA | igrkio

again, this time in New York, he talks her into letting him paint her. She
turned out to be a very... | GA | igrkio
