Ramon Subercaseaux c. 1880 |
Born in
Valparaiso which is right on the coast and not too far from the capital,
Ramón (1854-1937) was the Chilean Counsul to
Paris. At twenty-six years old he was only two years older than John.
Ramón was active in the artistic community, cultivating a number of
friends. He was himself an amateur artist.
His career
was quite successful,... | GA | igrkio
Cafe on the Riva degli Schiavoni 1880 |
Sargent is
positioned himself just east of the Piazzetta at San Marco looking west. The domed
building across the canal is the Santa Maria della Salute. The Libreria is straight ahead beyond the steps and
bridge; and the front facade of the Palazzo Ducaleis on the far right.
Further
west along the Riva degli Schiavoni he paints in oil.

The Entrance to the Grand Canal 1880/1882 Private Collection Unknown, USA |
Probably
the most tourist view painting he did of Venice. We are looking sort of
northwest from the lagoon. You can see the Palazzo Ducale
and the campanile of San Marco to the right and the domed Santa
Maria della Salute to the left.
Note:
Offered by Sothbeys but not sold; 5/27/1999; Lot 110; estimated

Venetian Alleys and Passageways
(Photos)
The
textured walls and the lighted opening at the end, lends itself well to this
great composition of perspective and depth -- a city which seems to be made for
such studies -- a city rich in interesting viscosity and corridors.

Venetian Glass Workers 1880-82 Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL |
In many of
Sargent’s Venetian Studies of 1880 and 1882 he shows Venetian women
stringing glass beads for the tourist trade. In a footnote of Linda Ayres
essay, she explains that what they are holding are long colored glass tubes.
These glass
tubes (also called cane) were probably made in Murano, then cut to bead size
and passed on to women... | GA | igrkio
The Bead Stringers of Venice 1880-82 |
The
painting, an unfinished sketch, shows bead stringers assembling the beads as
they sit outside in a small alley or corridor. The two nearest women face an
open door, possibly a bead shop similar to what Sargent
painted in Venetian Glass Workers (thumbnail). Apparently whatever he was
planning for the doorway, he grew frustrated and scraped, or... | GA | igrkio

Venetian Bead Stringers 1880 or 1882 Albright-Knox Art Gallery Buffalo, NY |
The process
of stringing beads involved gathering the beads onto wires from a small wooden
tray with a bowel type trough placed in their lap. These two seated women
appear to be sharing one of these wooden trays, as another woman looks on.
The
painting was made in the same Palazzo corridor as A Venetian Interior. For
whatever reason, the... | GA | igrkio |
