Egyptian Girl 1891 |
The nude
Egyptian Girl, I believe, is the only female nude that Sargent did in oil. As
the name implies, the painting was done in Egypt on his trip there to do
research for the Boston Public Library murals. In some ways it harks back to
the Velazquez's Venus at her Mirror. Like Sargent, this was Velazquez's only
female nude and both men paint... | GA | igrkio

According
to an account published in 1925, Sargent bribed an
official to gain access to Hagia Sophia. He made this
sketch in the early morning, just as warm, golden light began to fill the
space. Although he worked rapidly, Sargent still was
able to capture perfectly the grandeur and mystery of the building’s

Frieze of the Prophets (Study) c. 1892 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA |
As John
works at Morgan Hall (with Abbey) he toys with different conceptual ideas for
his Library decorations. This particular Prophet study shows him wrestling with
the arrangement. The demonstrative arms flailing upwards would indicate this
was an early study for the "Despairing Profits" -- four in this case
-- what would later become... | GA | igrkio
The Conversation, Portrait of Miss Elizabeth Lewis 1891 |
From: MBFA
The work
may have been executed at the Hotel Palumbo in Ravello, on the Amalfi Coast in
Italy, where Sargent stayed with Edwin Austin Abbey and his wife for several
weeks in July of 1891. The work depicts Miss Elizabeth Lewis (Lady Lewis) who was
later painted by [Sargent] in 1892.
Lady Lewis
was the wife of Sir George Lewis.

La Carmencita 1890 Musee d'Orsay Paris, France |
Carmencita
was apparently an very interesting and colorful character, a highly spirited
Spanish Gypsy Dancer who performed all over Europe and on the east coast of the

again, this time in New York, he talks her into letting him paint her. She
turned out to be a very... | GA | igrkio
