Edith French by John Singer Sargent c.1901 Private Collection Unknown, USA | Sargent, John Singer |
The general consensus is that she was a model in Sargent's
studio around 1901 and that Julie Heynman, a student of Sargent at the time,
was also the first owner of this painting (McKibbin Papers, quoted in Ormond
and Kilmurray, the Late r Portraits: The Undated portraits p.3)

Side Canal in Venice by John Singer Sargent 1902 Private Collection Unknown, USA | Sargent, John Singer |
Photos of Side Canals
Sargent did
numerous paintings of side canals over the course of his verious trips. This
one we see is done in a gondola, as many of them were. A stone bridge is in the
distance and such a delightful sense of the shimmering water.
