Chiron and Achilles by John Singer Sargent 1922-25 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Sargent, John Singer |
Sargent
ended up doing two versions of this composition, although both are of
significantly different mediums. The first (Thumbnail below) was part of a base
Bas-Relief for the Rotunda and was of raised painted plaster. The second (featured above) was later created for
the Stairway Ceiling Decorations and was oil on canvas.

Low Tide at Cancale Harbor by John Singer Sargent 1878 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Sargent, John Singer |
Looking
northerly along the sea wall of Cancale at la Houle -- the harbor. Just beyond
the sail of the boat you can see a dark brownish ramp that leads from the
Lighthouse (not shown off frame left) down into the harbor at low tide. The
"ramp" was replaced by a masonry "jetty" called Cale de la
Fenêtre. You can see the "ramp" in the photo...

Hi, Nat.

DC.
But this
image is a sketch version (you can tell it quickly by the hair color of the boy

King Philip IV (of Spain) by John Singer Sargent 1879 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Sargent, John Singer |
The
painting is a copy of Diego Velázquez's "King Philip IV as a Huntsman"
which is hanging at the Prado. It highlights Sargent's interest in studying
Velázquez for use in his portraits.
Sargent
must have copied this work on one of his trips to Spain. The date is a guess by
me but 1879 coincides with one of his trips to the Prado.

William Dudley by John Smibert 1729 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Smibert, John | Son of an early governor of Massachusetts, Dudley was a prominent politician. His luxurious clothing, dramatic pose, and the rich palette are typical of the early Baroque style. Compared with contemporary London works, however, Dudley's face is depicted with a high degree of individuality and realism. Portraits made for the European aristocracy often...
Mrs. William Dudley (Elizabeth Davenport) by John Smibert 1729 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Smibert, John | Smibert had been in the colonies only a few months when the Dudleys commissioned him to paint these portraits in the latest continental style. Such portraits were great luxuries, indicating the Dudley's wealth, ambition, and desire to stay abreast of European trends. The rich, skillfully painted fabrics that drape the sitter demonstrate both this and...
Judge Samuel Sewall by John Smibert 1729 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA | Smibert, John | Sewall (1652–1730) was among the leading jurists of Massachusetts, serving as chief justice of the Superior Court in the 1720s. Earlier in his career, Sewall presided over the 1692 Salem witch trials (and was the only one of the three judges to publicly recant his role in that event). Today, he is perhaps best known for his copious diary, which...

According to Smibert's notebooks, these relatively small, three-quarter views were the cheapest portraits the artist offered, suggesting that at this point...
