by Martin Johnson Heade

oil on canvas
38.42 x 61.28 cm (15 1/8 x 24 1/8 in.)

Museum of Fine Arts

Boston, MA

Heade, Martin Johnsonnotes
In the late 1880s, after settling in Florida, Heade painted a series of "reclining" magnolias. In these canvases, he contrasted the milky-white petals and glossy, green leaves of the indigenous "Magnolia grandiflora" to the rich texture and color of the velvet. One critic likened these sensuous works to "odalisques on a couch."

by Martin Johnson Heade

1868
oil on canvas
50.48 x 102.23 cm (19 7/8 x 40 1/4 in.)

Museum of Fine Arts

Boston, MA

Heade, Martin Johnsonnotes
Unlike Heade's unusual choice of the marshes, this landscape is a more traditional one, but he portrayed the passing effects of a rain shower in a highly original fashion. He minimized the contrast of values and loosened his paint handling to suggest the transient effects of light and atmosphere, something he would explore in depth in his marsh scenes.

The Stranded Boat

by Martin Johnson Heade

1863
oil on canvas
58.1 x 93.66 cm (22 7/8 x 36 7/8 in.)

Museum of Fine Arts

Boston, MA

Heade, Martin Johnsonnotes
A masterful evocation of the coast shrouded in fog, this painting deviates from the typical horizontal emphasis of Heade's seascapes and marshes. The title, probably not original, is misleading, as the boat has been carefully beached and secured to a stake on the shore.

"Landscape" is perhaps Philip Leslie Hale's most progressive painting, reflecting his awareness of Monet's move to more abstract subjects (in his series of poplar paintings, for instance) and of the Nabis, a French movement that sought to disavow academicism in favor of the more decorative aspects of art. Led by Paul Serusier, Maurice Denis, Pierre...
