This monumental image was painted to commemorate the General’s victory over the French in 1745 at Louisbourg in Canada, which can be seen in the background. It was given to the College in 1855 by the sitter’s great-granddaughter. Considered the artist’s masterwork, the subject’s bold stance, as well as sheer size powerfully transmitted the colonial’s pride in their military might.
