A native of Ohio, Charles Craig lived in Colorado over fifty years, painting the Western landscape and Indian groups around him. Frequently Craig visited the Ute reservation, the tribe that is the subject matter of this painting. Many of Craig's paintings were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1895.
