This portrait depicts the British textile manufacturer and inventor Sir Richard Arkwright (1732-1792). Though he began his career as a Lancashire barber and wigmaker, Arkwright was knighted in 1786 and, at his death, was among the wealthiest commoners in the kingdom. Arkwright rose from his humble origins through his development of the spinning jenny and other cotton-spinning machines that revolutionized the way cloth was manufactured.
