George Henry Hall
Miranda (From "The Tempest")
Dated: 1856

In Miranda (from "The Tempest"), George Henry Hall depicted the only female character from Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Shipwrecked on an island with her father, the sorcerer Prospero, Miranda is often considered to be nave due to her sheltered life. Here, she appears vulnerable and uncertain with her windblown scarf, downcast eyes, and awkward stance. Hall created several images of Miranda and other Shakespeare scenes throughout his career.
