Hoffman, a noted journalist and author, was born in New York, the son of Josiah Ogden Hoffman. In 1833 he established the "Knickerbocker Magazine"; in 1835 he became editor of the "American Monthly Magazine," and during the years that followed was associated with or contributed articles to many of the leading newspapers and literary magazines. He published several books, including collections of poetry.
