A three-quarter-length portrait to left, of a captain of under three years' seniority wearing undress uniform, 1748-67. He has a white dress wig and carries his gold-laced hat under his left arm. His right hand rests on a cannon and his left hand holds the hilt of his sword. A sixth-rate ship flying the red ensign is shown in the left background. The styling of the wig indicates that the portrait was probably painted shortly after the introduction of naval uniform in 1748.
