Homer's Leaping Trout is one of a series of watercolors of jumping fish that he created in the 1880s and early 1890s. Scenes of trout fishing were common in English and American art of the period, but Homer's approach was unusual. He presented the scene from the viewpoint of a fish, not that of
a fisherman, thus dramatizing the subject in both visual and emotional terms.
