First is Hugo (known as "Ego") Charteris, son of Lord and Lady Elcho (Lady Mary Elcho, of Sargent's 'The Wyndham Sisters'). He was the brother of Lady Cynthia Charteris Asquith. He married Lady Violet Manners, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland (sister of Marjorie Manners, Marchioness of Anglesey, and Lady Diana Manners, who married Duff Cooper).
[Hugo would not become Lord Elcho (his father's title) as he was killed in action during World War I in Egypt (1916). His son became the 12th Earl of Wemyss. See Burke's Peerage. Clarence Drennon when his father succeeded his own father as Earl of Wemyss and March.][1]
[Sargent also drew a "mug" of his grandfather Earl of Wemyss and March around c. 1908]
Both [of these] pictures were reproduced in Lady Cynthia Asquith's book, Diaries 1915-1918.
Though it's not known for sure, it is highly possible these drawings were included in the 1916 Royal Society of Portrait Painters, hosted at the Grafton Galleries.
Special thanks to Matt Davies, of Kansas City, C.B. Drennon, and Jonathan Whitney, all friends of the JSS Gallery, for a composite entry.

The Lord Elcho (Hugo Charteris) of Sargent's charcoal sketch, and who married Lady Violet Manners, never became Earl of Wemyss. He was killed in action during World War I (1916). His son became the 12th Earl of Wemyss. See Burke's Peerage.
