The view is looking northwest at the convergence of the Grand Canal and the Cannaregio Canal. The San Geremia is the domed building straight ahead and Located (D3) on the big map (the northern side of the Grand Canal and west side of Cannaregio).

If the traffic was anything like it is today, it would by like sitting in the middle of 5th Avenue. Palazzo Labia is now offices and has a sumptuous ceiling done by Tiepolo.

Painting a number of his scenes in Venice more than once, here Sargent did a watercolor (date unknown). It was quite possibly done at different years, revisiting the same subject only in a different medium.
