Margaret Stickney, wife of the American artist William Sargeant Kendall and herself a weekend painter, was working on a watercolor outdoors in Fairford, Gloucestershire in 1892. According to the family lore, John Singer Sargent attempted to instruct Ms. Stickney. He took the watercolor from her and began a sketch of his own on the reverse which he signed, dated, and inscribed to her. Ms. Stickney's original unfinished sketch remains on the verso.
