The sitter was the older brother of Joseph Farquharson RA who was a friend of John Singer Sargent. This dashing portrait illustrates very clearly Sargent's bold use of brushwork and limited palette. Robert Farquharson was laird of Finzean near Banchory and also the member of Parliament for West Aberdeenshire. When he died in 1918 his brother Joseph became laird of the estate that they had for so long run in partnership. This work was painted whilst Sargent was staying with the Farquharson family at Finzean.
