Recorded as from South Carolina. (W. Holsclaw, Charleston, South Carolina), in 1954.[1] (Eunice Chambers, Hartsville, South Carolina); sold 1955 to Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch; bequest 1980 to NGA.

[1] Holsclaw requested information on the painting and artist in a letter of 20 December 1954 to William Tripp, curator of the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Tripp replied 24 December, 1954. It is likely that Holsclaw sold the work to Miss Chambers shortly thereafter, as the latter sold it to the Garbisches as early as 23 February 1955 (per Garbisch records in NGA curatorial files).
