Barridoff Galleries is located in Portland, Maine overlooking the harbor and Casco Bay as seen in the image of the watercolor by John Bradley Hudson above in the late nineteenth century. The view is essentially the same today. The nearest island, in the center of the image, is House Island, which features the early Fort Scammell that once protected the inner harbor. The American flag to the left flies over the Civil War Fort Gorges, also to the left but not quite visible. Peaks Island, the most populated of the islands, is the far larger piece of land behind House Island. Little Diamond Island is the island to the left. Great Diamond Island, only partly visible behind it, is the location of Diamond Cove, where the famous oils of the harbor and views of Casco Bay by Charles Codman were painted. In moments by ferry from the busy peninsula of Portland, one can be transported to its crescent shape – a land seemingly far, far away. The Cove has been freed of wartime cement blockades, and the military buildings on its shore, hidden by trees, have been restored from their function as a base to hidden private residences.
