The Long Island Museum is a place to rediscover the richness of America’s cultural heritage.
In 2006, the Long Island Museum joined a small group of museums and cultural institutions nationwide in becoming a Smithsonian Affiliate. The Smithsonian Affiliations program allows select organizations to have greater access to its collections and educational resources, sharing, educational initiatives and research efforts.
The Art Museum presents changing exhibitions that bring to life the history and art of Long Island and their relation to American culture. The art collection contains more than 4000 paintings, sculptures and prints dating from the early 1800s to the present, including the largest collection of works by renowned genre artist and Stony Brook resident, William Sidney Mount.
The Carriage Museum houses the museum’s collection of more than 200 horse-drawn carriages, widely recognized as the finest in the United States. About 100 carriages are regularly on display, along with other rare artifacts from the carriage era. Admired for their beauty and craftsmanship, the carriages reflect an important part of America’s industrial and transportation history. The Carriage Museum also houses an authentic 19th century carriage making shop, complete with working machinery. New in 2010, the museum will add two new galleries: A Gentleman’s Coach House, complete with tack room and groom’s room, and the European Vehicles Gallery, displaying some of the most elaborate carriages in our collection.
The museum’s nine-acre park-like setting is the site for educational programs and special events throughout the year. A variety of innovative programs during summer vacations and school holidays inspire young artists and help children appreciate Long Island’s rich cultural history.
