Confusion regarding the identity of the subject has arisen from the label which refers to him as Johannis Provoost. It was reportedly applied in 1762 when the portraits of the subject and his wife were reframed; the date of 1685 was added at a still later time. The style of dress, however, seems later. Anna Maricka Bayard, named after her grandmother Anna Maricka Stuyvesant, was the daughter of Balthazar Bayard and Maria (Loockermans) Bayard of New York. She was married to Augustus Jay at the Reformed Dutch Church on October 27, 1697.

Tryntje Laurens, of Amsterdam, Holland, was married to David Provoost in 1668. The donor was her five-times great-grandson.

Born in Albany, Maria Abeel was the daughter of Christopher Janse and Neeltje Jans (Kroom) Abeel. She married Gerrit Duyckinck in the Dutch Church at Albany on July 6, 1683, and from her family inherited large tracts of land around Albany and New York. She was the mother of eleven children and was buried in the graveyard of the Dutch Church in New York.

Gerrit, the youngest son of Evert (1620-ca. 1702) and Hendrickje (Simons) Duyckinck, was baptized into the Dutch Church in New Amsterdam on April 11, 1660. As early as 1679 he was referred to as "Schilder" (painter), and in 1698/9 he is called a "Limner" ("The Burghers of New Amsterdam, 1675-1866," 1885, P. 73).
